  TECH TIPS!

GOT A "CHIRP" IN YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU START HER UP?
We have the answer.. This condition is your valve shims expanding, due to heat. When the shims expand, they don't allow the valve to close complety allowing the combustion heat to escape out and around the valve. The valve shims need to be adjusted. You do this first thing in the morning when the engine is very cold.

SEAT BELT REMOUNT!!!
This is being mandated by seat belt manufactures.. this effects all seat belts in all cars...and ours in Baby Grands with NASA..
We have made a new mounting bracket for the seat belts, which to the best of our knowledge meet manufactures specs... Here are photos to show you what we have done... There is no warranty expressed or implied.. Make sure that hardware is SAE grade (5) five or better. Please refer to NASA 2005 rule book "#15.5 Driver restraint system" for compliance. Pay particular attention to 15.5.6 and 15.5.7 for attachment angles... This will vary due to driver shoulder height and seatbelt  holes!!! This will pass NASA Tech Inspection
however, the following two adjustments are recommendations from NASA...
     1)   Add gussets under the angle iron to help prevent it from  bending upward (forward).

     2)   Bend the belt mount tab upward slightly to give the belt a little clearance between the mounting tab and the angle iron.  This will help prevent excessive wear on the belt at that point.

BLADDER VERIFICATION OF REPLACEMENT INVESTIGATED!
We are currently investigating the need to replace the entire bladder and or unit..
FUEL SAFE Fuel Cell bladders!  ALERT!
 www.fuelsafe.com
Due to several fuel additives and mixtures Fuel Safe has sent out an alert to educate you about your bladder ( Not your bladder but your cars bladder)... The have found the rubber components of the fuel systems to be deteriorating...
Fuel Safe suggests and NASA demands that racers drain the fuel bladder and inspect it thoroughly for fraying, wrinkling or blistering...
NASA Annual Tech Requirement!!!
1)In log book note MFG/Serial # and MFG Date
2) In log book in Front in the Annual Section: List the information again and sign it as the inspector..
ALL BLADDERS OVER 5 YEARS OLD MUST BE REPLACED!!
IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE FOAM BE REPLACED EVERY 2 YEARS..
NASA will be checking for seat belts!! SFI 2 years or less
If mounted in rear compartment, a shield must be placed between tire and belts for protection!!!
GOODYEAR TIRE MOUNTING ALERT!!!
Goodyear tires must be mounted this way WHEN NEW!!!
FOR ROAD RACE ONLY

LEFT FRONT                  RIGHT FRONT
SN# outside                 SN# inside

LEFT REAR                    RIGHT REAR
SN# inside                   SN# outside

After a couple of sessions, the tire can be mounted/rotated to any position!!
If a seam appears, it will not effect the tire.
A chunk out of the tire is a PROBLEM!

We use Nitrogen for airing tires.
Keeping your engine temps down..
Photos are listed in  parts and accessories.. This fire wall is one that we used last year and it dropped our temps drastically.. It allows more air to flow behind the engine.. It can only be installed with the engine out...The dimensions listed are a base that we use.. We rivet it in place and use the insulating tape inside and out...
A Slipping clutch can cause friction, which causes extra heat!
Trailer Tips:
Always trailer with transmission in neutral
When you have reached your destination check for loose bolts.
Nail polish works well to mark your bolts for movement!

TRANSPONDERS
Can be purchased through NASA
Hard Mount Transponders must be mounted
(shown here) Left rear frame
WINTERS REAR END AXEL and SPOOL lubrication.. You might want to pull both axels out and lubricate the axel shaft that goes inside the spool. We use bearing  grease or graphite. They do not come lubricated from the Baby Grand Manufacture. We have lost several spools. The axel is steel and the Spool is aluminum...
REAR END OIL  We use Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W90. When changing your gears, you can reuse, just strain it first.. If you see anything.. take a closer look.
RAIN TIRES Use and old set of Goodyears. Take them to your track tire supplier and ask that they be grooved for rain. I will install a photo in the next few days.  It is a directional "V" pattern... Works very well.. We will run all point races rain or shine..
FLUSHING YOUR FUEL SYSTEM
This procedure was recommended when having to change from oxygenated fuels to race fuel.
Drain Tank
Flush (run race gas Non Oxygenated) through tank for approx 20 minutes.
Fill with Race gas and use
This should rid your system of the residual oxygenaters left behind from CA Pump Gas.
There should be no need to replace sponge in tank.
NOTE: It will not get rid of residuals from additives.....
CHECK YOUR COUPLER BOLTS.. They work loose.
HEAT SHIELD YOUR THROTTLE CABLE
When you have been out on the track, the heat can cause your throttle cable to get soft. You come in park and the plastic gets hard and can allow your throttle to stay wide open!  Don't get caught getting ready to go out on grid and have to change out your throttle cable!!  After coming in and allowing your engine to cool down.. start your car to make sure it is moving freely!
GREASE YOUR BEARINGS
GOT A CHIRP IN YOUR HEAD!
Time for a adjustment.. More coming up!
ADJUST YOUR VALVES
technique coming soon...
TIRE PRESSURE IS CRITICAL.. We start at 18#..
CHECK YOUR SHOCK MOUNT BRACKETS FOR FRACTURES
DON'T USE HIGH OCTANE GAS
ONCE YOU START YOUR ENGINE LET IT IDLE UNTIL IT IS WARM...
Don't blow air across headers onto the cylinders... blow air on cylinders and past headers to a exit point...
CHECK YOUR AXEL BEARINGS FOR WEAR AND DISTORTION
HOUR METER  We have found this to be invaluable.. makes it very easy to keep a log on tire wear and maintenance...
Check your engine oil level... Approx 4.5 quarts. After running engine to operational temperatures, shut engine down. Make sure car is level. Wait 5 minutes and check oil level. On the site glass, you will see 2 hash marks. One on top and one on the bottom. The oil level should be 1/3 up from the bottom line. or 2/3 down from the top hash mark. We have found that a long handled mirror works well.
